Cafe Racer magazine’s August/September issue is out today and focuses on something we all hold dear to our hearts (and driver’s licenses…) Serious Speed. The issue features several stories dedicated to the men and women who take life on two wheels to an entirely different level as they push the envelope of motorcycle performance. Just as the Ton-Up Boys and Rockers of Mid-Century England experimented with motorcycle technology, constantly modifying their machines for greater velocity, the veteran roadracers, skilled technicians and brave riders in this issue are willing to risk everything for their passion.
Among the folks who impressed us mightily is Bay Area rider Erin Sills, the only female motorcyclist with her own display at the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The veteran rider and off-road tour guide has been pursuing Land Speed records on her heavily-modded BMW S1000RR superbike for years and she holds a fistfull of impressive titles including a Guinness World Record.
We also had a series of interviews with legendary AHRMA racer Alex McLean, a competitor who started his track career racing small-displacement bikes on French circuits in the early ’70s. Alex is still taking home checkered flags and filling the family trophy cabinet for his work aboard not one, but two vintage Manx Norton singles. Laid and back and unassuming, Alex tells CRM he’s won some 45 championships in classic roadracing over the years, a feat made that much more impressive at the age of 70.
Our newest columnist Anthony Conroy turns in some excellent writing with the first of what we expect to be many of his High Revs columns while the fanatical racing fan also penned an exhautively researched piece on Harley-Davidson’s incredible success in the Motoamerica Super Holligna race series with the unlikkliest of motorcycles: the Saddlemen Racing team has worked wonders with one of H-D’s Pan America adventure bikes, transforming it intoa sleek, handsome and very rapid racer capable fo 165 MPH and easily topping podiums all season.
There’s also road test of the new and very sexy MV Agusta Dragster America and yes, our first-ever dualsport road test on BMW’s capable F900GS, plus the usual assortment of custom feature bikes, useful tech tips and fast-paced motorcycle entertainment. Greb yours on sale now.
